Listening, Responsibility,
and Joy
Music has never been just another subject for me.
It has been a space where I learned responsibility, persistence, and how to share joy with others.
Violin: Learning to Persist
I began learning the violin at the age of nine. As my musical journey progressed, I prepared for ABRSM Grade 6, which proved to be one of my most challenging experiences. I did not always have enough time to practice, and producing the sound I wanted felt frustratingly difficult. There were moments when I genuinely wanted to give up.
What kept me going was my commitment to the orchestra. Preparing a single piece together and working toward a shared performance felt meaningful, and I wanted to fulfill my role responsibly. By focusing on steady preparation rather than perfection, I ultimately earned ABRSM Grade 6 with Merit. The sense of accomplishment I felt was quiet but deeply rewarding.
Orchestra: Choosing the Team
Since Year 3, I have been an active member of the orchestra at North London Collegiate School Jeju. In Year 8 (Grade 7), I transitioned from violin to double bass. After discussing the depth and resonance of sound with my teacher, I was given the opportunity to explore a new role within the ensemble.
The double bass taught me how foundational support shapes the entire performance. While the instrument changed, my mindset remained the same—listening carefully, staying aware of others, and contributing to the overall balance of sound.
Performing for Others
One of my most meaningful musical experiences took place during Year 7, when I had the opportunity to perform at a Christmas charity concert for patients at H.I. Women’s Hospital. Performing four duet pieces with a friend was both exciting and humbling. Music, in that moment, became a way to offer comfort and warmth rather than simply a performance.
I also enjoy informal moments of music, such as busking with friends at school. These experiences remind me that music can be spontaneous, shared, and joyful.

A Personal Moment on Stage
Among many orchestra concerts, one performance stands out clearly. A few days before my mother’s birthday, I asked my teacher and friends if we could prepare a small surprise. With their support, I introduced a piece on stage and dedicated it to her birthday.
Standing at the microphone was nerve-racking, but seeing her smile made the experience unforgettable. After the concert, teachers and parents approached her to offer birthday wishes. It was the first time I realized how powerful music can be as a gift—one that connects people through emotion and care.
What Music Means to Me
Violin and double bass create different sounds, yet I value both deeply. Music allows me to express emotions, reset my mind, and share meaningful moments with others. Whether performing on stage or imagining future busking in unfamiliar places, music remains a source of joy, balance, and connection in my life.
